Hard Drive Reformatting: How NOT to Securely Delete Data
By using forensics techniques and tools, Latent-Data was able to recover a number of files indicating that the computer had been used by employees of the metro government's water department. Found were departmental memos, staff meeting notes, Excel spreadsheets detailing employee work hours and performance reviews, e-mail messages, customer names, account numbers, and addresses, a departmental phone book, and the license codes for software previously installed on the computer.
How to securely sanitize hard disk drives
Since reformatting doesn't work, how should you clean your personal or company data off a hard drive that you are selling or throwing away? Aside from total destruction of the hard disk drive's internal platters, consider "wiping" the hard drive with software designed to do so. This will write zeroes to every single bit of the hard disk drive (including the FAT, Root Directory, and Data Area), thereby erasing all previously stored data.
